Boron is a little discussed mineral. It is one of a group of minerals called trace minerals. They’re named this because our bodies actually need very small quantities of these minerals as opposed to bulk minerals like calcium that actually form structures in our body. In fact, boron wasn’t even considered an essential mineral. It wasn’t until 1985 that scientists recognized that boron was in fact necessary for the body. Before that, it was believed that we could do without boron with no ill effects.
Boron helps build strong bones. It does this by working in concert with magnesium and calcium. The availability of these minerals is greatly improved by boron. It also helps transport them throughout the body. By increasing the amount of these crucial minerals available to our body, boron helps make our bones stronger and more dense.
This explains why a number of studies of boron have focused on its ability to prevent osteoporosis and arthritis. Calcium forms a major part of the joint tissue. In arthritis, this tissue becomes damaged. This damage lead to chronic pain and swelling. Boron may slow arthritis by helping repair the joint tissue. It does this by making more calcium available to repair the cartilage. Similarly, its effect on the availability of calcium makes boron useful for preventing osteoporosis. The bones become stronger and more dense by boron’s action on magnesium and caclium.
Boron is also used in the formation of a number of natural steroids. Bodybuilders have found that using it seems to boost testosterone production. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone; it controls affects muscle mass. More testosterone allows bodybuilders to bulk up more easily. Studies have also shown that it affects the production of estrogen. It has been particularly used in menopausal women and in some studies was an effective replacement for hormone replacement therapy.
Boron also boosts brainpower. It appears to improve memory. This might be due to its ability to make magnesium more available. A recent study showed that magnesium improves memory in animals. Since many American adults have a magnesium deficiency, boron may help by making the magnesium more readily available. This study also noted that regular magnesium supplements often do not reach the brain because of poor absorptions. Liquid supplements help minerals pass through our digestive tract to where they’re needed. Combined with a liquid magnesium supplement, boron may help stop memory loss due to aging.
In larger amounts, boron can be toxic. You should always follow the advice of your doctor and the recommended dosage instructions that accompany any supplement you take. Liquid boron supplements will make the mineral more readily absorbed and usable by the body. Consider adding a boron supplement to an existing magnesium and calcium supplement to give their effectiveness a boost. This is one mineral that science took a long time to recognize as beneficial but is now understood to provide a boost to maintaining optimum health.
